WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Donald Trump is taking control of D.C.'s police force and sending in the National Guard, a move that's sparking immediate pushback from city leaders.

President Trump says this is about restoring order in the nation's capital, but city leaders call it federal overreach and say they weren't asked for input.

"This is liberation day in D.C., and we're going to take our capital back. We're taking it back,” said Trump.

The White House says the move is necessary because city leaders haven't done enough to stop crime.

"It's becoming a situation of complete and total lawlessness,” said Trump.
