Spencer Hatcher is grieving an unfathomable loss.

The country singer’s mother, Holly Hatcher , was killed Aug. 3 by an armed intruder during a home invasion in Virginia, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a joint video statement with the Hatcher family. She was 62.

The intruder—later identified by police as 41-year-old Kevin Walker —entered the home and fatally stabbed Holly, a local schoolteacher, before attacking her husband Michael Hatcher , according to Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson . During the altercation, Michael, 65, was able to retrieve a handgun from his car and fire a single shot at Walker, killing the attacker.
