WEST COLUMBIA — The S.C. Department of Education is reviewing a Lowcountry school district’s accreditation after learning that a former superintendent, while employed in that job, also worked for the firm that reviewed and accredited her district.
That relationship came to light in a July report issued by the South Carolina inspector general’s office. The state watchdog agency's report said the relationship amounted to a conflict of interest and created an “extreme-high-risk of fraud.”
In addition, the agency raised broader concerns about “senior officials” in other school districts working simultaneously with Cognia, a nonprofit organization that reviews and accredits almost every school district in South Carolina.
