PLANO, Texas — A dead bat tested positive for rabies in Plano, officials said.

The bat was found dead on Aug. 4 in the 3300 block of Landershire Lane, according to the city. Plano Animal Services sent the bat for testing, and the testing revealed it had rabies. While the bat did not have any known contact with humans or pets, city officials warned it was a good reminder to make sure rabies shots are up to date.

“This positive test highlights the importance of keeping all vaccinations current – especially rabies – since there is no way to predict when a pet may come into contact with a wild animal,” Jamey Cantrell, Animal Services Director, said in a news release.

Anyone who thinks they or their pets have come into contact with the bat are asked to call Plano Animal Services at 972-769-4
