San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Justin Verlander recorded his 3,500th career strikeout on Sunday, becoming one of 10 pitchers in MLB history to ever reach that milestone.
The 42-year-old Verlander struck out Washington Nationals first baseman Nathaniel Lowe with a 95-mph fastball for his 3,500th career strikeout, which ended the first inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
Verlander entered Sunday’s game three strikeouts shy of 3,000 and tallied six on the day for 3,503 in his career. The Nationals defeated the Giants, 8-0.
“I was happy to get there, happy to have the moment with the fans,” said Verlander, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and 2011 American League MVP. “It’s a cool milestone. I really appreciate what it’s taken to get there.”
