WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Donald Trump is preparing for a highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska this Friday.

The Trump administration says the top priority is brokering a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

"I think it will be good, but it might be bad. I'm here for one reason: to get rid of a war somebody else started,” said Trump.

The Trump administration has been trying to negotiate an end to the fighting between Russia and Ukraine for months now. President Trump says he hopes the meeting leads to a ceasefire, but he's tempering expectations.

"I may say lots of luck, keep fighting or I may say we can make a deal,” said Trump.

President Trump has suggested a ceasefire deal might mean Ukraine has to give up land.
