It’s been almost two years since the DeJarnett family lost a beloved member of their family. Jaiden DeJarnett died after a high-speed 35-mile police pursuit that went across multiple counties on Sept. 4, 2023.

His family is still seeking answers - and justice.

The 16-year-old’s grandfather, Reggie McKenzie, said he has been trying to figure out exactly what led to his grandson’s death. He couldn’t find the answers, so he decided to file a lawsuit.

On behalf of the estate of Jaiden DeJarnett, McKenzie is suing the City of Decatur, Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling and people involved with the Decatur Police Department for excessive force and wrongful death. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
