A near-record-breaking Cornwall Waterfest Dragon Boat Race a day of fun to the Cornwall Canal on Saturday.

Falling just two short of last year’s tally of 25 dragon boats, Waterfest attracted more than 400 paddlers and at least another 400 spectators along the Water Street shoreline.

Among the 10 local teams was a new squad from Cornwall Community Hospital.

“We had a great turnout today, so much so (other teams) were asking if we would put in another next year,” said Cindy Ley, the hospital’s environmental services manager.

“That tells you how much fun we had.”

Ley said it was fairly easy to recruit hospital staff, even though she was the only one with prior experience when she won a draw to participate many years ago.
