BEAUMONT, Texas — Tropical Storm Erin formed Monday afternoon about 280 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, becoming the fifth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season , according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, was located at latitude 17.4 North, longitude 28.0 West at 10 a.m. Central Time, the Miami-based hurricane center reported. The system is moving west at 20 mph and is positioned approximately 2,305 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands.

No coastal watches or warnings are currently in effect, and the storm poses no immediate threat to land areas.
