Less than three weeks before he shot and killed a police officer near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Patrick White seemingly was ready to end his life.

“Goodbye, take care, I love you, I’ll be with you soon,” White, 30, said in a message to his father, according to a Cobb County police report.

As the investigation continued Monday into the shooting that killed DeKalb County police Officer David Rose and left White dead, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited the CDC, though he didn’t make any public comments. Kennedy was greeted by several protesters, including current and former CDC employees, some who held signs.
