One worker is dead, at least ten others are injured, and another remains missing after multiple explosions Monday at U.S. Steel’s Clairton coking plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The blasts, which occurred around 10:51 a.m., sent black smoke into the air, shook nearby homes, and prompted air quality warnings within a one-mile radius. Authorities have not determined the cause. The plant, North America’s largest coke-making operation, has a history of deadly incidents and environmental violations. Environmental advocates are calling for an independent investigation and a review of whether the facility should continue operating.
