President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is ordering a federal takeover of local law enforcement in Washington, D.C., as well as deploying 800 members of the National Guard to the nation’s capital in an effort to combat what he claims is the rampant crime and homelessness plaguing the city. “This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we’re going to take our capital back,” Trump told reporters in the White House’s press briefing room.
