SALT LAKE CITY — One man is in police custody after he allegedly stabbed another man twice in Pioneer Park Sunday night, police say.

According to the Salt Lake City Police Department , the stabbing happened at approximately 8 p.m. near Pioneer Park and the Downtown 360 Apartments.

When first responders arrived, they found a 74-year-old man with a laceration on his neck and left bicep. Medical crews transported him to a local hospital in critical condition, according to a police affidavit.

Witnesses told police that a man, later identified as Alex Jones, 33, “came up from behind the victim with a knife and stabbed him in the neck area,” the affidavit stated. Jones then fled on foot.

One of the witnesses chased Jones, thinking he had stolen something and was trying to escape.
