PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Eight years after Portland Bureau of Transportation officials said the 42nd Avenue Bridge was "inadequate," work began Monday on a new bridge to replace the one that is about to disappear.
The 2-year project completely shut down the 88-year-old bridge and detours traffic onto Killingsworth and Columbia Boulevard. The new bridge will be earthquake resilient and will upgrade its pedestrian and bike options in the process.
Once complete, the new bridge will connect the NE Holman Neighborhood Greenway and the NE 47th Avenue multi-use path. • The 42nd Avenue Bridge was described as a 'crusty, ‘inadequate' relic,' December 20, 2017 (KOIN, file) • The 42nd Avenue Bridge, December 20, 2017 (KOIN, file) • The new 42nd Avenue Bridge approaching from the south: a 7-fo
