ST. PAUL — President Donald Trump announced Monday, Aug. 11, that he plans to deploy the National Guard in Washington, D.C., and take federal control over the Metropolitan police department.
Trump said the move to invoke the D.C. Home Rule Act is in response to crime and homelessness in the city, NPR reports . Under the D.C. Home Rule Act, the president has the power to temporarily take over the police department under “special conditions of an emergency,” according to the ACLU .
A news release from the Department of Defense said approximately 800 National Guard soldiers were activated in support of the takeover Monday.
