DES MOINES, Iowa —
The Swine Barn at the Iowa State Fair is bustling with activity, as 4-H and Future Farmers of America participants showcase their hard work and dedication. For many, this is the culmination of a year’s worth of preparation, and for Lauren Van Hauen, it’s a family tradition.
“In 2000, my aunt won Grand and Reserve Champion, so it’s kind of been a family thing. I’ve been showing since I was 4,” Lauren said.
Now in her fourth year of showing pigs at the State Fair, Lauren says stepping into the ring still brings a mix of excitement and nerves.
“It really depends on the pig. Some pigs can be a little more ornery, so then I get a little more nervous. But Babs here, she’s my showmanship pig — probably my most trained pig. So I’m excited for her. A little nervous. But we’ll
