SAINT PAUL, Minn. (GRAY) – In 1994, Minnesota held six special elections in a single calendar year. It was, for a long time, the record for the most legislative special elections held in one year. More than 30 years later, the year 2025 is giving 1994 a run for its money.
Since Jan. 1 of this year, three special elections have taken place to fill vacancies in the House and Senate. By the end of this year, at least three more are set to take place.
A special election to fill House District 40B—the seat formerly held by the late Melissa Hortman—will be held on Sept. 16. Two other Senate elections will be held on Nov. 4.
