(FOX40.COM) — Household hazardous waste facilities are available to Sacramento residents who are advised to properly dispose of commonly used batteries.

The City of Sacramento warns residents that batteries can cause explosions or even catch fire when disposed incorrectly in a curbside container, in a collection truck or at the waste sorting facility.

"A common household battery can pose risk of fires when in close contact with other materials in the container or collection truck, especially during the warmer months," spokesperson for the Recycling and Solid Waste Division, Jesa David, said.

The HHW facility is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday, for residents to bring their batteries, fluorescent bulbs, paint, and pesticid
