AKRON, Ohio — Nearly four months after the Akron Board of Education voted down a contract with the City of Akron to keep school resource officers (SROs) in district buildings, the debate over campus safety remains unresolved.

The sticking point centers on whether school administrators should have the authority to order an SRO to leave the premises.

“The administrator in that building should be able to tell that officer that they need to leave and that officer should then exit the premise at that point,” said Akron School Board President Carla Jackson.

Jackson said the board wants clear language in writing.

“We want to make sure that we have something in writing, so then we know if you're asked to leave that you're supposed to exit.”

The stalemate stems from an incident last October
