CLARK COUNTY, Ind. —

A Clark County man charged in his wife's murder made his first court appearance Monday.

Police say Stephen Gower shot his wife one week ago in their home on Charlestown New Market Road.

Records state that Gower called police on Aug. 4 saying that his wife, Christina, had committed suicide in their home.

According to court documents, Gower told detectives the two got in a fight after a night of drinking, but police say his story was inconsistent.

An autopsy later determined his wife could not have shot herself.

Gower is being held without bond.

A judge has scheduled Gower's trial for January.
