SLIDELL, La. — A Slidell firefighter’s helmet camera recorded the tense moments as crews crawled through thick briars to reach a driver trapped in an overturned car early Sunday morning.

According to St. Tammany Fire Protection District 1, the crash happened just after 3 a.m. on I-10 East between the Gause Boulevard exit and the I-10/I-12/59 interchange. One of the vehicles landed upside down in a deep ravine along the bank of a canal, nearly hidden by tall brush.

Captain Chris Frazier, who has been with Slidell Fire for 18 years, says it took significant effort to even reach the wreckage.

“I had to crawl through about 20 or 30 feet of briars, about 10 feet tall, to make access to the vehicle,” Frazier said.
