BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP – The lightning and rain gave away Monday evening, leading players and coaches to file out of South Hills Middle School for the remainder of Bloomfield Hills’ first day of fall football practice.

Leading it for his 25th season as a high school football head coach is Scott Merchant, in his first year with the Black Hawks.

It’s a return to preps for Merchant, who took hold of Lawrence Tech for the 2024 season following 15 successful years at Chippewa Valley, and he seems thrilled to be back at this level.

“Shoot, I might have been more excited than they were,” Merchant confessed as his team took a break between sessions. “You just put so much planning and preparation in to get ready for the season, so when it’s here, it’s almost like Christmas.”
