IRMO, S.C. — The Town of Irmo is taking steps toward annexing nearly 20 acres of land along Dreher Shoals Road, with the potential for future commercial development on the site.

On Monday night, the Irmo Planning Commission recommended the rezoning of approximately 18 acres of wooded land for general commercial use.

While specific plans for the site have not yet been announced, town officials say the rezoning would allow for a variety of retail use.

“They're seeking a rezoning to general commercial and so that can be used for any kind of retail, restaurant or office use,” said Doug Polen, deputy administrator for the Town of Irmo.

Polen confirmed that residential housing would not be permitted on the property if rezoning is approved.
