New Jersey residents who were rattled by the recent spree of earthquakes in Bergen and Morris counties may have to get accustomed to the sudden shaking and loud booms, according to an earthquake expert who had predicted an uptick in seismic activity several years ago.

Alexander Gates , a geology professor at Rutgers University’s Newark campus who studies the locations and movements of quake faults, said the Garden State and New York metro region appear to be amid a recurring 40-year cycle of increased seismic activity.
