Jeanine Pirro, the United States attorney for the District of Columbia, said it "doesn't really matter" that crime rates had dropped in the nation's capital after President Donald Trump initiated a temporary federal takeover of policing.
Pirro made the remarks during a Tuesday interview with MAGA influencer Benny Johnson.
"The president has made a decision to do this surge in areas where we've seen a lot of crime, because D.C., no matter how you look at it, whether you think crime is up or down, doesn't really matter," Pirro argued. "There's too much crime here. And two years ago, we had one of the highest crime rates in the world in terms of cities."
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, however, violent crime in D.C. has plummeted since 2023.
"For those people who say crime is down, that's nonsense," Pirro said, disputing the statistics. "From what? From the fourth highest in the world in terms of a city?"
"You think anybody's being arrested for damage to property or to cars?" she added. "Let me tell you, I guarantee you there's 25 to 30 percent of the crime here that's not even being reported because the public knows nobody gives a damn."
"Not anymore. We're going to change all this. We're going to make people accountable."
In his Monday press conference, Trump claimed that crime in D.C. was "out of control" and "getting worse."
