Under Arizona law, registered sex offenders cannot live within 500 feet of a school, playground, daycare center or other designated child safety zones. Next week, that distance could be doubled under a proposed Mohave County ordinance.

The measure would prohibit Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders convicted of prior offenses involving minors from residing within 1,000 feet of schools, licensed childcare facilities, public parks, libraries, school bus stops and other locations primarily used for youth activities. Current state law restricts only Level 3 offenders and sets the distance limit at 500 feet.
