PELHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Municipal elections are just two weeks away, and in Pelham, the race for mayor is between two current city councilors: Rick Wash and Maurice Mercer.

CBS 42 spoke with residents about the issues that matter most to them and took those concerns directly to the candidates.

Austin Lotz, who has lived in Pelham for six years, said his priority is improving the city’s school system.

“I have a 6-year-old that just went into the school system here, and he’s going to be here for his elementary years at the very least,” Lotz said.

Mercer said his record shows he’s committed to Pelham City Schools.

“I was part of the council that broke away from Shelby County schools many years ago, and so we did it for our students,” Mercer said. “Now, we have an independent school board,
