The scenario called for southpaw masher Paul Goldschmidt, but he did not pinch-hit. It turns out that he wasn’t available, as manager Aaron Boone revealed in the postgame that his first baseman is battling a “low-grade right knee sprain” that he sustained while chasing a popup during Tuesday’s game. It might well turn into an IL situation ahead of what was to be Goldschmidt’s first series back in St. Louis since the Cardinals let him walk in free agency (after a successful six-year stretch that saw him capture the 2022 NL MVP).
