ST. JOHN'S - A significant wildfire in Newfoundland and Labrador has potentially destroyed up to 100 homes and structures. Premier John Hogan stated that conditions remain too hazardous for crews to safely enter the area and conduct a thorough assessment of the damage.

The wildfire, which ignited on August 3 near Kingston, N.L., is currently burning along the northeastern shore of Conception Bay. According to Hogan, the fire has expanded to over eight square kilometers.

Jamie Chippett, a spokesperson for the Forestry Department, noted that recent improvements in weather conditions have helped to slow the spread of the fire near St. John's. However, he emphasized that the fire is still active underground and remains classified as out of control.

In a related incident, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary reported the arrest of a 20-year-old man for allegedly starting a series of brush fires in downtown St. John's on Tuesday night. The police stated that the individual is set to appear in court on charges of arson with disregard for human life.
