Iam a trained ecologist, and have lived most of my life in Moorhead.

This summer, I have traveled around town visiting all of Moorhead’s prairie plantings in an attempt to map all the non-residential pollinator pockets in our town. It has taken all summer because, as I’ve discovered, there are a lot of them! The city of Moorhead’s Comprehensive Plan states that Moorhead seeks to “Pursue strategies to increase the number of eco-friendly, pollinator-friendly plantings on public and private land.” The dozens of native plantings I have visited around town are filled with bees, butterflies and dragonflies (a natural predator of mosquitoes), and this shows me our attempts to help pollinators and other beneficial insects are working.
