COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS ALL ABOUT TRADITION.
SO, IT SHOULDN’T BE SURPRISING THAT TWO OF THE SPORT’S MOST HISTORIC PROGRAMS – WHO JUST HAPPEN TO BE BITTER RIVALS – HAVE LONGSTANDING CUSTOMS WHEN IT COMES TO HONORING THEIR ALL-AMERICAN PLAYERS.
AS THE A-P CELEBRATES THE 100TH YEAR OF ITS ANNUAL ALL-AMERICA TEAM, LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT HOW THE BUCKEYES AND WOLVERINES PAY HOMAGE TO THEIR BEST OF THE BEST.
SOUNDBITE (English) James Laurinaitis, Ohio State All-American linebacker:
“So, this is Buckeye Grove, which is an awesome tradition here at The Ohio State University, just where when you become an All-American, first-team All-American, they will plant a tree for you in your honor. … It's a really cool, I think, space to kind of honor some of our best and most talented football players. … Eddie George to Orlando Pace, Troy Smith, Donte Whitner, and obviously the guys that come after me. It's just an awesome space to kind of remember the names that, ‘Oh yeah, he went here. Gosh, he went here.’ It's pretty cool to kind of honor that tradition.”
SOUNDBITE (English) Sherrone Moore, Michigan head coach:
“It’s one of the coolest traditions you can see in college football with the sweaters being able to have your picture up there. … Our student-athletes get to see it every single day, whether they're going to meetings, whether they're going to the cafeteria, whether they’re going to the locker room, you see the guys of the past and you want to be on that wall. It's a motivating factor for you.”
UPSOUND Desmond Howard, referring to fellow Michigan All-American wide receiver Anthony Carter, calls him a (English) “beast”
SOUNDBITE (English) Desmond Howard, Michigan All-American wide receiver:
“Well, you're remembered as one of the greats, that's for sure. You put on the V-neck sweater with the maize block ‘M,’ and you take your picture. And you know that you're in a special group. You're in a small, really special group of football players that achieved some significance. … You understand that's a very small group of players who have ever been nominated to be an AP All-American. So, to be chosen, selected as an AP All-American is a huge honor.”
