Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith issued an executive order Thursday directing officers making traffic stops to notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) if they stop any undocumented immigrants.

The officers should inform ICE agents even if the migrants were not charged with a crime or detained, according to the order, first obtained by NBC Washington.

The new order comes as President Donald Trump federalized police in D.C., bringing in 800 National Guard, citing rising violent crime. Crime statistics do not support those claims.
