Council officers had to scrap plans for fencing around new school rugby pitches to save more than £100,000 and bring it in within its budget.

Midlothian firm Sportsmasters UK Ltd have won the contract to create two grass rugby pitches and a long jump area at Wallyford Learning Campus for just over £400,000.

A report to East Lothian Councillors says the firm was the only one to submit an offer for the contract but it was initially estimated to cost £517,000.

It says the councils' housing development team work with contractors to carry out an engineering exercise to find ways to reduce the costs to within its budget and agreed to remove fencing and gates in the original plans.
