UNION, S.C. (WSPA) - Thousands of cities across the country will soon have to remove toxic chemicals from their water sources; the biggest challenge, though, is paying for it.

In the Upstate, the City of Union Utilities company said leaders are aware of concerns of chemicals commonly referred to as PFAS, or “forever chemicals” being detected in water meant for city customers.

Utilities director, Lance Davis, said the chemicals aren't just in the Broad River Basin where many South Carolina municipalities like Union pull from, they're showing up all over the country.

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a category of man-made chemicals which have been used for decades in non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing and firefighting foams.
