The United States fought off Canada’s comeback attempt to win 4-3 in a shootout during the semifinals of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup on Friday.
They went 3-for-3 on their three attempts to defeat the Canadians for the first time in 18 years at the event.
Blake Zielinski scored a power-play goal to give the Americans a 3-1 lead with 1:02 left in the second period, but Tynan Lawrence scored early in the third to bring Canada within one.
Canadian forward Mathis Preston buried a wrister short side with just over five minutes remaining to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The Americans will face Sweden in the gold medal game on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, while the Canadians will contest Finland for bronze at the same time.
