PHOENIX — The Washington Fire, burning north of Payson, saw a slight decrease in acreage and increase in containment on Saturday.

The latest incident report had the wildfire’s acres burned at 551 and its containment at 5%. Friday’s incident report listed it at 575 acres with no containment.

Southwest Interagency Incident Management Team 1 started overseeing efforts to suppress the lightning-caused wildfire, which has prompted evacuations, on Friday.

Rain helped slow the fire’s spread on Thursday, a day after it started.

Crews are attacking the fire directly and working on a full suppression strategy.

They will also continue to work on structure protection.

On Friday, fire crews focused on creating hand lines near the Mount Meadows, Washington Park Estate and Shadow Rim communities.
