RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond is cracking down on speeders.

If you’re driving down Main and Cary streets, you may have noticed some new additions near the crosswalks called bump outs.

“This is a proven engineering technique to slow down speeds, reduce crashes, which is therefore saving lives,” said Andy Boenau, the transportation engineering program manager for the city of Richmond.

He said this is all part of Vision Zero, a global initiative that aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

Years ago, Cary and Main streets along with other city roads were identified as high-risk for crashes and accounted for 76% of serious collisions. The bump outs are a way to bring that number down.
