"This proposal for the hunt is unpopular and unethical," said one woman to the Board of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Wednesday.

She was opposing a planned bear hunt, the first since 2015. A man later stepped to the podium and called hunting his "family’s tradition" for 200 years.

In the end, the hunters won. "All in favor say aye. Aye," voted the Commission.

In 2015, 304 bears were killed, and in such a quick fashion, the statewide bear hunt ended in just a few days. It ended after one day in central Florida.

FWC’s justification for a bear hunt, with the stated goal of managing and protecting the black bear population, is exactly that: population. The FWC's presentation clearly states that bear population "growth rates" justify a hunt.
