NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A superseding federal indictment filed Friday accuses New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and former NOPD officer Jeffrey Vappie of exploiting their positions to carry out a years-long fraud scheme that used public money for personal purposes, including concealing a romantic relationship.

Aug. 15 marks the first time in the city’s history that a sitting mayor has faced criminal prosecution.

Mayor Cantrell faces the following charges:

CONSPIRACY - 1 count

WIRE FRAUD - 6 counts

CONSPIRACY TO OBSTRUCT JUSTICE - 1 count

OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE - 1 count

FALSE DECLARATION BEFORE GRAND JURY - 2 counts
