LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Law enforcement officials are warning people to tread lightly with a new in-app feature on Instagram.
The app is now offering a live map that shows followers your exact location.
“It could be used for easy grooming and target access. It could be used for human trafficking,” said Michigan State University cybercrime expert Thomas Holt.
He’s concerned the new feature might encourage behavior like stalking, especially in the case of romantic partnerships.
“As an example, you might block someone on Instagram if you had a relationship and it ends, but they might still be able to track you,” he told News 10. “They may make an account that’s unrelated to their real identity and use that to follow you.”
It could also be a major issue for survivors of domestic violence.
