LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

New Mexico State University and former men's head basketball coach Greg Heiar reached a settlement after he sued for wrongful termination.

Heiar claimed he was made the ' scapegoat for hazing ' after a pair of hazing lawsuits were filed by former Aggie players. He was fired in 2023 after those allegations were made public.

His inaugural season first saw a fatal shooting at the University of New Mexico involving one of his players ahead of its Rio Grande rivalry game in Albuquerque. The involved player, Mike Peake , was indefinitely suspended and never returned to the Aggies program.

NMSU eventually canceled the remainder of its 2022-23 season after the hazing allegations were made in February 2023.
