GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A new Gallup poll shows Americans are drinking less than at any point in the last 30 years, with many now seeing even moderate drinking as unhealthy. Some local breweries are feeling the pinch as sales slow and drinking habits shift.
“Beer's going to be around so we don't need to be too pessimistic but it's certainly tougher times now than a few years ago,” said Scott Graham from non-profit, Michigan Brewers Guild.
In Grand Rapids — Beer City USA — beer is culture. However, fewer Americans are drinking. A recent Gallup poll shows just 54% of Americans said they drink, and 53% believe any alcohol is unhealthy.
Graham said the industry is feeling the shift.
“We've seen the number of breweries opening is now less than the number of breweries closing,” said Graham
