MINNEAPOLIS — A Hennepin County vocational counselor was allowed to return to work after bailing out of jail following charges of violent stalking and burglary filed in Hennepin County.

Dedrick Mays, 53, is accused of escalating stalking behavior in April after an on-again, off-again girlfriend of 18 months broke up with him.

According to the criminal complaint:

The victim said she began carrying a gun out of fear of Mays. The situation culminated on April 24 when he again hid in her garage and "bum rushed her" when she got home, according to the criminal complaint. The woman then shot Mays in what police determined was self-defense.

Court records show five additional women between 2007 and 2012 had filed domestic assault orders for protection against Mays, and a federal jury convicted
