The weekend of Aug. 8, 9 and 10 was “hot-hot-hot” but the games went on at the Red McCarthy ball fields despite the high temps coupled with high humidity all weekend. About 400 slo-pitch softball enthusiasts descended on the ball fields over the course of three days and played several games all weekend, all part of the Espanola Annual Mixed Slo-Pitch Tournament that has been taking place for almost 40 years.
This year there were 36 teams from Manitoulin Island, Sudbury, Blind River, Massey, Sagamok, Birch Island, Elliot Lake as well as from Espanola. Friday’s games began at 6:15 and went on as late as 10 p.m. Lots of food and drinks were available at the ball field pavilion all weekend thanks to Gerry Massicotte and his crew.
