YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — Immigration authorities arrested at least two Arizona residents with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status in August, including 27-year-old Jose Valdovinos of Yuma .
Valdovinos’ family said he is a DACA recipient in good standing. They said that during his arrest, he was told the program is not considered legal status.
DACA, established in 2012, allows certain immigrants brought to the United States as children to avoid deportation and obtain renewable work permits. The program was never a law but has been upheld by the courts as a policy.
In a statement, DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the agency does not view DACA as protecting any noncitizen from deportation.
