COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Friday meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has generated hope for potential progress toward ending the three-and-a-half-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine, according to an international studies expert, though significant challenges remain in reaching any ceasefire agreement.

Dr. Glen Duerr, a professor of international studies at Cedarville University, said the bilateral discussion represents a notable development in diplomatic efforts.

"The two sides really haven't been at this stage in quite some time," Duerr said.
