A very public display of force by ICE is offering new fuel to a Bay Area lawmaker’s effort to unmask federal agents.
Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener of San Francisco says federal agents should not be wearing masks when interacting with the public and has written legislation requiring them to unmask.
Masked and well-armed Border Patrol agents showed up just outside a Gov. Gavin Newsom press conference on Thursday. The feds denied the gathering was an attempt to intimidate or draw a spotlight, instead saying it was part of a mass enforcement action.
“Donald Trump and his minions, Tom Homan, tough guy. Clearly decided, coincidentally or not, that this was a location to advance ICE arrests,” said Gov. Newsom.
