A statewide change to how high school golfers in Colorado can qualify for the state tournament may mean fewer Western Slope athletes competing for a title.

The Colorado High School Activities Association announced in December that they would be moving away from hosting regional tournaments to determine state qualifiers for boys and girls golf. Previously, the top two teams and top 13 additional golfers from each regional tournament would earn bids to play for a state title. Now, regional tournaments are no more. Players will be selected via their rankings according to the iWanamaker Player Ranking System’s algorithm.

The move away from regional tournaments came as a surprise to many in the high school coaching ranks.
