GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — With West Michigan kids preparing to go back to school, a Corewell Health child psychotherapist says parents play a key role in helping children adjust.
Mild anxiety before or shortly after classes begin is normal, Aubrey Longstreet said. But ongoing avoidance, classroom disruptions, isolation or physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches and rapid heartbeat may signal deeper issues.
“The first step is validating emotions and letting kids know they’re not wrong for feeling that way,” Longstreet said. “If the problem continues and feels beyond a parent’s grasp, it’s time to reach out to a professional.”
