HOWLAND The Ohio State Highway Patrol, in collaboration with the Howland Township Police Department, is conducting an OVI (operating a vehicle while impaired) sobriety checkpoint tonight from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Elm Road in Trumbull County.
The checkpoint is being funded by a federal grant and is intended to deter and intercept impaired drivers.
The Supreme Court has previously ruled that notifying the public about sobriety checkpoints is necessary to comply with the Constitution's protection against illegal search and seizure. While the 1990 ruling did not specify what constitutes adequate notification, it established that publicizing the location is required.
